He began his saxophone studies with Bob Tricarion of the Tonight Show Orchestra, and eventually began working with various jazz bands, including Lionel Hampton. Living in New York gave him access to the best teachers from the New York Philharmonic and Metropolitan Opera. Girard trained in both classical and jazz, which gave him the flexibility to perform in a variety of situations. He attended Manhattan School of Music and completed his studies with a doctoral degree from Columbia University.

Girard has many years of experience teaching students of all levels. He evaluates each student on an individual basis, spotting his/her strengths and needs and developing a program of study that will enable the student to achieve his/her goals.

In addition to his performing and teaching activities, Girard is a composer and lyricist who has written a musical entitled “Beautiful Dreamer.” The story is based on the lives of composer Stephen Foster and African American violinist Solomon Northrup. The piece is now in workshop.
